The Walls of Change initiative invites residents to transform dull, gray walls throughout the city into vibrant canvases of colour and imagination. Participants, ranging from professional artists to passionate amateurs, work together to design and execute large-scale murals that reflect the unique character and stories of their neighbourhoods. By collaborating on these public art installations, residents develop a sense of ownership and pride in their surroundings. The process of brainstorming ideas, sketching designs, and bringing them to life on the walls promotes community bonding and a shared appreciation for the arts. The final murals serve as dynamic reminders of the power of collective creative expression to uplift and inspire.
Since 2019, the Community Programmes Office has introduced the 18dART Community Arts Scheme, bringing performing arts to each of Hong Kong’s 18 districts. Artists put down roots and focus on their creative practices, engaging in sustainable, interactive, and participatory arts activities. The goal is not only to impact participants positively but also to develop community arts programs unique to each district. The scheme makes social art events accessible, allowing the public to experience creativity wherever they go.
